What to Take to University If You Have Low Vision

Oct 8

If you are starting university this month, congratulations! You may have bought pots and pans and stationary, but have you organised your low vision aids? Here is a list of essential items we recommend if you are going to university:

Good lighting

Starting university in October can mean that days are shorter and therefore studying or reading in the evening can become harder. We therefore recommend having desk and reading lamps to make these less stressful on your eyes. Here are our top recommendations:

Table Top LampThe Table Top task lamp provides a good source of light together with a removable magnifier to aid vision for reading and detailed activities. The flexible arms of both light and magnifier ensure they can be positioned to maximise comfort and the light and magnification available. Buy it here.

Magnificent Floor & Table LED

The MAGnificent Lamp is ideal for all types of detailed work. This lamp is cleverly designed to be used as both a floor lamp (with 2 different height options) as well as a table lamp. The Daylight™ LEDs provide high contrast and accurate colour matching, making it easier and less tiring to read, work and see detail clearly. LEDs use very little energy. Buy it here.

Daylight Twist Portable Lamp

Daylight's(TM) popular portable lamp now comes with an ingenious Easy-Twist(TM) shade for maximum light angle & maximum work space! The 'Easy Twist' shade has been designed by daylight(TM) to give you the ultimate spread of light across the whole of your work area. This means you can achieve the best colour matching ever with the sensational light delivered by daylight(TM)'s 13W energy saving tube (200W equiv).

The lamp itself is lightweight and designed to fold neatly away, making it very easy to transport. Now for the technical bit - this top lamp boasts even more practical features, all designed to make sure you craft in comfort. The lamps detachable base makes it extremely stable and with daylight(TM) technology there is absolutely no strobe effect so eyestrain is reduced and potential headaches are eliminated. Electronic Magnifiers

University can require lots of time researching on a computer or reading books. When you have low vision, this can be more strenuous. Therefore we recommend an electric or video magnifier which also allows you to save images, therefore you can refer back to particular pages.

The Compact 7 HD Hand Held Electronic Magnifier offers a greater overview and more visible words per line, all captured on the large 7 Inch Widescreen display with High Definition image quality. The video magnifiers range of magnification from 2x to 24x allows users to see the finer details on the ergonomically tilted screen.

smartlux Digital Hand-held Video MagnifierThe smartlux Digital is an easy to use video magnifier and is particularly helpful for those who are unfamiliar with technology products but require a little more than a standard optical magnifier. Relaxation

All the extra strain on your eyes from studying can leave them feeling tired. We highly recommend taking an eyebag with you - then you and your university friends can have relaxing nights in!

The Eyebag Warm CompressThe Eyebag is a reusable, simple and easy to use warm compress which helps treat a variety of eyelid and eye problems. Eye surgeons, doctors and opticians often recommend regular use of a warm compress.

The Eyebag is silk and suedex which can be reheated up to 200 times in a microwave. Simple heat the compress in a microwave for 30 - 40 seconds, remove from the microwave and lay the Eyebag across closed eyes. (If contacted lenses are worn please be sure to remove these before using the Eyebag)

Once the Eyebag has been heated it will stay warm for up to 10 minutes. The warmth softens and releases the natural oils in the eyelid glands which are then able to "lubricate the blink"

Use The Eyebag for ten minutes twice everyday for a fortnight to rapidly relieve the symptoms of dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, styes and eyelid cysts. The Eyebag will quickly relieve tired, sore, gritty and burning eyes.

The Eyebag is a patented, CE marked Class 1 medical device registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (the MHRA) Conditions which usually benefit from a regular twice daily eyebag treatment include Meibomian Gland Dysfuncton (MGD), Blepharitis, Dry Eye Syndrome, Styes, Eyelid Cysts, Contact Lens Dry Eye, Corneal Laser Dry Eye, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Rosacea.
