What to avoid for healthy eyesight

As well as there being foods that are good for your eyes - such as dark leafy greens, citrus fruits and berries - there are also foods which are not good for your eyes. Here is what to avoid and why:

Table sauces and dressings

Do you love a salad dressing? Salad dressings often contain high levels of sugar – much alike sauces such as ketchup. Studies have shown links between sugary foods and age-related macular degeneration. 20% of those who have age-related macular degeneration could have avoided developing AMD if they had eaten less sugar, a study showed.

Sweeteened drinks

Put down the pop; fizzy and sweet drinks have been linked to reduced eye health. Studies have shown that the sugar content not only increases the chances of age-related macular degeneration, but also heightens the chances of developing type 2 diabetes, which in turn can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

Processed meat

Bacon, sausages, lunch box ham – all of it has high levels of salt. Eating more than 6g of salt per day can cause water retention in your kidneys, which in turn makes your eyes puffy and swollen.

High salt levels are also associated with high blood pressure, which can damage your retinas if left untreated.

Fried foods

Fried foods are filled with fatty oils, which are not good for your eyes and can lead to raised cholesterol and age-related macular degeneration. Bad cholesterol can lead to vision loss, as well as heart attacks, strokes and clogged arteries.

High sugar, high salt…higher risk of getting diabetes or age-related macular degenerations.
